A HISTORY OF PIT ROAD RACEWAY

Pit Road Raceway is the newest addition to Heller Motor Sports complex and the SCORE schedule. A 1/25th scale 1/5th mile, the track measures 10’ wide by 20’ long.

Lane lengths are:

Lane 1 41'
Lane 2 43'
Lane 3 45'
Lane 4 47'
Lane 5 49'
Lane 6 51'

The bench work is built of 2x6 pine lumber, is very stout, no problem walking on the track if need be. The track surface is 1” Birch plywood and of varying ages with the turns coming in at about 20 years old. Originally built by the Weikel boys and friends the track was approximately the same size as it is now. It occupied a back room of a garage on Locust street from about 1987 to 1990.

It then was purchased by Scott Lee and moved to Birdsboro, renamed Jiffy Lube Speedway and remained on the Reading Slot Car Association schedule. In the summer of 1992 Scott decided to make a banked track and go in a different direction from the RSCA‘s style of racing. He replaced the existing turns with turns that had a continuous radius and very steep bank. It was also around this time that the RSCA was losing some of it’s mainstay basement tracks and an idea was tossed around of renting a space to house at least 1 track so the hobby could continue. Roadie had found a place in the area and purchased Pit Road’s turns from Scott. It was around these turns that a new version of Pit Road raceway was built.

The warehouse as it became known, turned into a Key Club and one of the best things to happen to our small group at the time. But as the saying goes "all good things come to an end". And in 1997 it was time to move.
